Today the Human Rights Council appointed the first-ever UN expert on SOGI / LGBTI rights. Vitit Muntarbhorn (Thailand) will take up the post of Independent Expert on the “protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).” The position was mandated by the passing of a landmark HRC resolution on June 30th this year. Muntarbhorn is well known for his human rights work and has served as special rapporteur on North Korea and on the Commission of Inquiry on Syria.
